One thing to consider: A little preparation in the fall will make your pool startup in the spring easier. Simply give algea the knockout punch before it can get started.
These steps are for winterizing your swimming pool when using chlorine as a sanitizer.
Preparing the Pool
- Make sure the pool is clean and free of any debris by brushing walls and floor then vacuuming afterwards.
You may want to using a Floccing Agent such as Floc & Clear to help settle small particles to the floor for easy vacuuming.
- Inspect the pool for visible signs of algea. If algea is present you will need to eradicate any living algea prior to wintering your pool.
For visible algea, use a Pool Algeacide as directed to remove algea and dead particles
- Check the phosphate levels in your water using a Phoshate Test Kit. If your phosphate levels are high, you will need to get them down prior to
closing your pool. Phosphate turn into Orthophosphates which are food for algea (More on Phosphates). A product such as
Phosfree is a great phoshate removal system.
- Balance your water for Hardness, Alkalinity and pH. Note that keeping pH on the high end (7.8-8.0) will help keep algea from forming over the winter.
Winterizing Steps
- For each 10,000 gallons add 1 1/2 lb. oxidizing shock such as Super Charge or
SUN BURN EXTRA are excellent oxidizers.
- Allow pump to run 24-48 hours until chlorine level has dropped back to and acceptable range. Then add a strong 60% quat based
Algeacide.
- Remove all cartridge filters and DE Elements to prevent algea from forming while not in use. Drain water from lines and pumps if freezing is possible.
Just remember and ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure
