Choosing Chlorine Pool Tablets Trichlor is the most common tablet form of chlorine. It is a stabilized form, meaning that it has
cyanuric acid pressed into the tablet. The cyanuric acid protects the chlorine against sun damage. Trichlor is slow-dissolving. It works well
in floating devices or in-line erosion feeders. Tablets should not be thrown directly into the pool as they can cause staining and etching of
plaster or deterioration of vinyl. They should also not be placed directly into the skimmer because they could cause corrosion of metal pipes
and equipment. Another form of chlorine pool tablets is calcium hypochlorite. It is commonly used for shock treatment. It is not stabilized
with cyanuric acid. It has 65 percent available chlorine per pound compared with 90 percent available chlorine in Trichlor. It is popular due to
availability and low price. It is often recommended that calcium hypochlorite be dissolved in water before being added to a pool. Trichlor
chlorine pool tablets are not recommended for spas because they are slow-dissolving and have a highly acidic nature. The tablets are perhaps the
most convenient form of chlorine disinfection for swimming pools. They are available in one inch and three inch sizes with one inch tablets fitting
almost all automatic feeders. The number of tablets used in a particular pool will depend upon size, water balance and pH levels.
